Title:Passive Metasurfaces for Antenna Applications: From Static Multifunctionality to Dynamic Reconfigurability

    Abstract:
Electromagnetic metasurfaces enable subwavelength control over the amplitude, phase, and polarization of electromagnetic waves, making them one of the promising ways to advance next-generation antenna technology. Compared with active-component-loaded designs such as those employing PIN diodes, passive metasurfaces offer a compelling route to multifunctional and reconfigurable performance, with the advantages of low power consumption, low cost, and favorable scalability to high frequencies. This talk presents recent advances in the evolution of passive metasurfaces, progressing from static multifunctional architectures, including full-space chiral metasurfaces for bidirectional transmit-reflect-array antennas, spin-decoupled anisotropic metasurfaces for low-sidelobe dual-circularly-polarized transmitarrays, and direction-duplex Janus metasurfaces for asymmetric beam shaping and holography, toward dynamically reconfigurable architectures based on twisted chiral metasurfaces, a promising passive strategy for achieving dynamic electromagnetic functionality. These developments underscore the important role of multifunctional and reconfigurable metasurfaces in satellite communications and next-generation wireless systems.
