    Title:Toward Ultracompact Holographic Metasurface Antennas for LEO CubeSat Communications

    Abstract:
    The rapid growth of low-Earth-orbit CubeSat missions is creating strong demand for antennas that combine high gain, high efficiency, and circular polarization within a severely constrained payload volume. Holographic metasurface antennas offer a promising route toward this goal through their low-profile form factor, surface-integrated feeding, and flexible control of aperture fields. However, maintaining efficient radiation becomes increasingly difficult as the electrical aperture is reduced, since guided power may reach the antenna boundary before being fully converted into radiation.

    This talk explores an approach to ultracompact holographic metasurface antennas based on the joint control of surface-wave propagation and radiation leakage. An electromagnetic bandgap structure is incorporated to tailor the dispersion characteristics of the guided mode, while multilayer impedance modulation strengthens coupling to the desired radiating mode and supports circular polarization. The underlying tradeoff between efficiency and size, antenna synthesis procedure, and practical multilayer implementation will be discussed. A fabricated antenna prototype is presented as a case study, with simulated and measured results used to examine impedance matching, polarization, gain, and radiation efficiency. The results demonstrate the potential of dispersion-engineered holographic antennas as compact, high-performance solutions for CubeSat communication payloads and other size-constrained space platforms.

    Biography:
    Dr. Gangil Byun (S’12, M’15, SM’21) received his B.S. and M.S. degrees in Electronic and Electrical Engineering from Hongik University, Seoul, South Korea, in 2010 and 2012, respectively, and his Ph.D. degree in Electronics and Computer Engineering from Hanyang University, Seoul, South Korea, in 2015. Following graduation, he joined Hongik University as a Research Professor, where he conducted research for two years. In February 2018, he joined Ulsan National Institute of Science and Technology (UNIST), Ulsan, South Korea, where he is currently an Associate Professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering. He is the Director of the Mission-Driven Satellite Systems Research Center (Space-K) and the Core RF/Power Component Research Center for Low-Orbit Next-Generation Satellites (LONGS). He also leads the InnoCORE Intelligent Defense Systems Research Group (IDS RG). He served as an IEEE Antennas and Propagation Society (AP-S) Young Professional Ambassador in 2023 and received the IEEE AP-S Young Professional of the Year Award in 2024.
